Counterfeit parts are not a rare problem in construction machinery — they are a routine one, and they concentrate in exactly the places where failure is most expensive: hydraulic pumps and valves, travel and swing motors, turbochargers, injectors, filters and seal kits. A copied seal kit costs a fraction of the original and destroys a cylinder in a season. A copied filter passes debris straight into a pump.
This is a working guide to telling the difference, written from the supplier side of the counter: it deals in what you can actually observe on a loading dock or in a workshop, not in claims that cannot be verified.
First, agree on the vocabulary
Three different things get sold as "SANY parts", and only one of them is a fake:
- Genuine / OEM-boxed — produced for SANY by its own plants or its contracted suppliers, sold in SANY packaging with SANY part numbering.
- OE-equivalent (aftermarket) — made by a component manufacturer under its own brand, often the same factory that supplies the OEM line, sold in its own box. Legitimate, frequently cheaper, and completely acceptable for many wear items.
- Counterfeit — a low-cost part dressed up to look like one of the first two. It carries markings it has no right to.
An honest supplier will tell you which of the first two you are buying, and the price will make sense for that answer. A price that undercuts the market by half for a "genuine" hydraulic pump is not a bargain; it is an answer.
Casting and machining marks
Structural and hydraulic parts are cast or forged, and the mould tells a story. On genuine components you should see:
- Crisp, evenly raised casting text and logos, consistent in depth across the part. Copies are typically reproduced from a scanned original, so lettering looks soft, blurred at the edges, or shallower in places.
- Clean parting lines with flash removed properly, no grinding scars across sealing faces.
- Machined faces with a regular tool pattern and consistent surface finish. Chatter marks, uneven bore finish or visible steps in a sealing land are serious warnings.
- Foundry identifiers, date codes and cavity numbers in a consistent position on every unit of the same batch — fakes often have them missing, ground off, or in the wrong place.
Weight is a surprisingly good screen: copied castings routinely come out light because wall thickness is reduced. If you have a known-good part or the old part off the machine, put both on a scale before you fit anything.
Part numbers and labelling
Learn what the numbering for your machine family looks like and treat anything irregular as suspect. Practical rules that hold up regardless of the specific scheme:
- The number on the label, the number in the parts catalogue for your serial number, and any number cast or stamped into the part itself should agree.
- Character count, separators and grouping should match other parts you have bought for the same machine. Extra digits, missing separators or an unusual block length are worth a question.
- Labels should be printed, not photocopied: sharp barcode bars that scan on the first pass, no pixelation in small text, no misalignment on the label stock.
- A part number is model- and serial-specific. SANY revises components across production runs, so "fits all SY excavators" is a marketing claim, not a specification.
Always quote your machine model and serial number. Any supplier who does not ask for the serial is guessing.
Packaging and paperwork
Genuine packaging is boringly consistent: the same box style, the same print quality, the same label position, the same protective caps and plugs on hydraulic ports every time. Variation between boxes in a single shipment is a red flag. So is a hydraulic component that arrives with open, unplugged ports — no legitimate line ships a pump or valve that way.
On the paperwork side, ask for the packing list to match the box labels item by item, and ask where the goods shipped from. A supplier who can name the origin and produce consistent documents across repeat orders is giving you something you can audit over time.
The three checks that catch most fakes
If you only do three things, do these:
- Compare against the part you removed. Same weight, same port positions, same spline count, same seal groove dimensions, same casting text. Photograph both together before fitting.
- Measure the fits that matter. Bore diameters, shaft diameters, seal groove width and depth, and overall stack height with a caliper. Copies drift at the tolerances that need real process control.
- Ask two written questions before payment: is this OEM-boxed or aftermarket, and which factory or country did it ship from? A clear written answer, plus a warranty you can invoke, is worth more than any hologram.
When a part is already suspect
Stop before installation. Once a doubtful pump runs, contamination spreads and the warranty conversation gets much harder. Photograph the part, the labels and the packaging as received, keep the box, and raise it with your supplier in writing while the goods are still untouched. Cutting open a used oil filter to inspect the media and the bypass valve is a cheap post-mortem on the source you have been buying from.
Buying well is mostly a habit: one or two suppliers who ask for your serial number, quote genuine and aftermarket separately, and stand behind what they send — plus a five-minute inspection at goods-in, every time.
